Real-time Boatbuilding is a beautiful photographic book put out by Salt Spring residents Bianca and Gordon Barnes, chronicling 20 years of a project that Gordon began in 1967 - a project that still has some steps to go before the boat is finished. The idea of a journey that remains incomplete after decades may appear to signal a poignant lack of closure. But in fact, the project itself, the book and a future film on the topic by Bianca are all artifacts of a craftsmanship almost unheard of in this age of instant gratification. The related projects contain the high artistic value of the work itself, as well as an important lesson on the value of slowing down and doing things
